One of the challenges we faced was to secure the perimeter fence in the 2 places where the river exits our Village. A rudimentary attempt had been made to secure these exits with palisade fencing. However with every flood event the fencing would be bent out of shape. Razor wire was used to plug the holes after every flood which occurs several times a year. In addition to this Gabions to protect the river banks in this area had been particularly poorly constructed and were collapsing. The solution was do do some major re-profiling of the river bed which allowed us to install swing gates that would open in the event of flood events. The gates are fitted with shear pins to allow them to be locked under normal conditions. An alarm was fitted to alert security in the event that the shear pins break and the gate swings open.
This work was done during the winter of 2018.

- This was the river South exit area. Every flood event bent the palisade fence out of shape.
- Leaving a gaping hole.
- We cleared away the rocks and rubble.
- Built some formwork.
- And filled it with concrete.
- Using a snorkel from the property next door.
- And installed swing gates and alarm..
- We then turned our attention to the collapsing gabions just below the gate.
- We cleared tho old gabions and created a proper footing.
- We added proper mattress footings.
- We then turned our attention to the North river exit.
- Cleared away the rocks and rubble.
- We installed a similar concrete footing as at the South Gate.
- And a new swing gate also connected to an alarm.
